Why Drawings Often Appear Flat
Many drawings initially appear correct – the shapes are accurate, the proportions are recognizable. Yet, something crucial is often missing: spatial depth.
The reason usually lies not in the line work, but in the handling of light and shadow.
Tonal values help to make volume visible. They show where light hits a form and where shadow is created.
What Tonal Values Actually Are
Tonal values describe the lightness or darkness of a surface.
In drawing, many gradations can be depicted, but for beginners, five basic levels suffice:

brightest highlight

light area
-
mid-tone
-
core shadow
-
cast shadow
With these five areas, an astonishing amount of spatial effect can already be created.
A Simple Exercise
Take a pencil and draw a simple sphere.
Then try to incorporate the five tonal value areas:

the brightest highlight at the top
-
a light area around the highlight
-
a mid-tone on the shadow side
-
the darker core shadow
-
and below it, the cast shadow on the ground
This exercise helps to understand light as a form-giver.

Why Tonal Values Make Shapes Visible
Our eyes perceive shapes not only through lines, but primarily through the distribution of light.
A sphere without tonal values appears flat.
With light and shadow, it suddenly begins to show volume.
Even simple geometric shapes like cubes, cylinders, or spheres gain spatial effect as a result.
A Glimpse into My Own Process
Tonal values also play an important role in my illustrations.
Before colors come into play, I often first consider where light and shadow fall. Even in reduced or minimalist motifs, a clear light-dark structure helps to make the form understandable.
This doesn't mean that every drawing has to be heavily shaded. Often, a subtle gradation is enough to make a motif appear calmer and more stable.
